 Christopher Newport University invites applications to fill the position of Assistant Director/Counselor in the Office of Counseling Services.  Reporting to the Director of the Office of Counseling Services, the successful candidate will assist students in defining and accomplishing personal and academic goals by providing individual or group counseling services, including on-call crisis intervention, to assist students in overcoming specific personal, educational, or behavioral problems that interfere with healthy living and success at the University.  The successful candidate will also conduct seminars and workshops to address preventative and developmental needs of students and support student adjustment and development in the residence hall and classroom through appropriate programs and services.

Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree in counseling, social work, clinical/counseling psychology, or a directly related field, including coursework and/or appropriate training in individual and group counseling, substance use/abuse, theories of personality, abnormal psychology or psychopathology, standards of ethical practice, and learning and development.  Knowledge of developmental issues of college students and knowledge of and sensitivity to multicultural issues required.  The successful candidate must have experience in providing counseling; experience in crisis counseling and on-call intervention; and excellent oral and written communication skills.  The successful candidate must be currently licensed or license eligible. If not currently licensed, the position requirement is to obtain Virginia licensure within one year of date of hire.  Preference will be given to candidates who can serve as a generalist counselor. We also desire the person to have experience in counseling in a college/university setting. Additionally, the successful candidate may perform other duties as assigned by Director.
