Assistant Director of Human Resources for Employee Relations

 

Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Human Resources for Employee Relations.  Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, this position supports the enhancement of the CNU work environment by promoting and enhancing positive and effective employee relations and performance planning and evaluation through a variety of proactive means to include training, workshops, and individual meetings.  The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: serving as a consultant to managers and employees to strengthen employee relations and performance planning and evaluation; analyzing problem situations and creatively work with employees and managers to find alternative methods of dispute resolution; providing or coordinating mediation to assist in employee dispute resolution; developing and providing training on a regular basis, as well as, individual information sessions on personnel policies, employment rights, the use of the grievance procedure, and performance planning and evaluation to employees and managers; and effectively managing the classified and administrative/professional faculty performance planning and evaluation processes to include process, schedule, employee and manager notifications, training, tracking, and follow-up.

 

A master’s degree; or a bachelor’s degree with significant experience that equates to an advanced degree is required.  The successful candidate will have experience in personnel administration, counseling, and/or legal profession; excellent written and verbal communication skills; considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel administration and applicable federal and state laws; working knowledge of the grievance rights of employees, personnel policies, and judicial and administrative decisions related to employee rights; attention to detail; problem solving skills; demonstrated ability to counsel clients effectively and mediate issues with managers and human resource officers to resolve employment disputes; and the ability to investigate and analyze complex questions, issues, and disputes.  Preferences will be given to candidates with experience in human resources relations/employee dispute resolution; experience in employee relations in a college/university setting; and mediation experience.
