Christopher Newport University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Music. Appointment is effective August of 2008 and will be at the academic rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will be a highly enthusiastic teacher and recruiter who will quickly develop an outstanding orchestra and strings program. The responsibilities include serving as the Director of Orchestral Studies; conducting the University Orchestra; teaching applied conducting and orchestral literature at the graduate level; collaborating with Opera CNU and Music Theatre; coordinating the applied string faculty; recruiting outstanding string majors; overseeing all aspects of the strings curriculum; and teaching music courses in the liberal learning curriculum. Requirements for tenure-track appointment include an earned doctorate in orchestral conducting, string performance, or string pedagogy in hand by August 1, 2008 and significant experience in conducting orchestra and teaching strings at the university level. Candidates with ABD status may apply, but the appointment would be a restricted position at the rank of instructor. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and academic credentials.
Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in Choral and Instrumental Music Education, Performance, Music History and Literature, and Music Theory/Composition, and Jazz Studies; the Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Music; and the Master of Arts in Teaching degree with concentrations in Choral Music Education and Instrumental Music Education. Professional instruction is available on all woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments, as well as, in piano, harpsichord, organ, voice, composition, conducting, and jazz improvisation. The Department of Music has 12 full-time music faculty and 25 adjunct faculty who serve approximately 125 music majors. The music majors are highly committed to their profession, evidenced by their high school participation in district and all-state honor ensembles, their placement in collegiate competitions, and their invitations to perform at state, national, and international events.
Christopher Newport University is a selective, residential state-supported institution of approximately 4,800 students located between historic Colonial Williamsburg and the ocean resort of Virginia Beach. The Fall 2007 freshman class of more than 1,200 students was selected from over 7,000 applicants and has an earned average SAT of about 1171. Nearly 3,000 students reside on campus, including 95 percent of all freshmen and sophomores.
