INSTRUCTOR IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES
(Generalist)
The Department of Communication Studies at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a restricted (non-tenure-track) faculty position, effective August 2008. The University is seeking teacher scholars who are committed to undergraduate education, who want to engage students in creative intellectual challenges, and who will be active in their service to the University and community. For appointment at the rank of instructor, candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Communication Studies or a MA in a related field with at least 18 graduate hours in Communication Studies by August 1, 2008. Applicants will be expected to teach lower level Communication courses and potentially advanced courses in his/her field of expertise, which may include: Interpersonal Communication, Rhetoric, Media Studies, Critical Cultural Studies, Intercultural Communications, Persuasion, Public Communication, Gender and Communication. The successful candidate will also be able to offer lower division courses in support of the liberal learning core, such as freshman seminars. The Department’s research and teaching are interdisciplinary, emphasizing the production and reproduction of systems of meaning, belief, knowledge, culture, and behavior. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and potential for scholarly research are required. Skills in the use of new technologies and the ability to work collaboratively on scholarship with members of the department or other departments on campus are highly desirable.
The Communication Studies Department has increased its number of majors by 150% over the last two years, placing us in the top 10% of majors of choice at CNU. An increasing number of the Department’s undergraduate students attend conferences, move onto graduate school, and win national awards. The teaching load is 4-4 with courses capped between 20-30 students.

Experience as a student or faculty member at a liberal arts and sciences institution is preferable.
